Error 2753. The File 'xtendsoftapservice.exe' is Not Marked for Installation

Some users may encounter this error when updating their drivers or Killer Control Center, or when uninstalling the Killer Control Center.

Even if you are in the process of updating the Killer Control Center, the issue is that the installer is unable to find this file in order to uninstall it, which is a necssary step for installing the latest suite.

The problem is that the file is either not present, or is not correctly flagged in the registry. This is a bug that was introduced in a few versions of the suite when it was present on your machine during a major Windows feature update, or an upgrade to Windows 10 from another version.

This issue can be resolved by following these steps:

  1. Download the latest Killer Control Center and keep it somewhere handy, to install when you're finished uninstalling the old suite -
  2. Download Microsoft's tool for fixing problems that block programs from being installed or removed -

    microsoft uninstall fixit2

  3. Once you have both of those things downloaded, uninstall all Killer products from your Apps and Features menu, which you can access by right-clicking Start.

    right click start uninstall killer

  4. You may encounter that same error - Error 2753. The File 'xtendsoftapservice.exe' is Not Marked for Installation - and that is fine. When you do, skip that application, and uninstall any other applications from "Killer" including "Killer Drivers."

  5. Now run the tool from Microsoft.

  6. For the first menu, you will simply click Next

    ms uninstall fixit 1

  7. Then after a moment of "Detecting Problems", it will ask if you are having a problem installing or uninstalling a program. Even if you are trying to update or install the Killer Control Center, the actual problem is happening when the installer attempts to uninstall the old suite, so you will choose Uninstalling

    ms uninstall fixit 2

  8. At the next prompt, the program will ask you to choose from a list of programs. Find the Killer-related program in the list. It may not be the same as the one in this screenshot, but choose whichever Killer suite the program finds, and then click the Next button.

    ms uninstall fixit 3

  9. The tool will then proceed to erase the parts of the Killer suite that the installer was unable to remove from the registry. If the program is not listed, you have the option of choosing "Not Listed", and the tool may still find the pieces in the registry that need to be removed. However, it is hard to duplicate that particular scenario, so providing a screenshot is not possible, but it is fairly self-explanatory.
  10. Once the tool has finished doing its work, you will want to restart your machine once more, and then install the latest Killer Control Center, which you downloaded previously.

Service Not Running

You may experience a situation where their Killer Control Center says "Service Not Running" instead of operating normally.

service not running

This can often be resolved by simply restarting the machine by clicking Start > Power > Restart, especially if the Killer Control Center has recently been updated.

In Windows, services start before anything else, including other programs. If the service does not start automatically when the machine starts, then there is likely another service that is preventing it from starting, or the service is not set to start automatically

You can check to make sure that the service is set to run automatically by following these steps:

  1. Click Start, type services.msc and press Enter.
  2. Scroll until you find the Killer Network Service and double-click it.
  3. Make sure the "Startup Type" is set to Automatic. You can also manually start it from here by clicking Start button, which will clear the error until you next restart your machine.

If it was already set to automatic, then the next step will be to find out why it did not start. The primary culprit is usually an antivirus or firewall program. If you are running an antivirus or firewall program, try temporarily uninstalling it, and reboot to see if that solves the issue. Unfortunately, simply disabling an antivirus or firewall program will not stop its service from loading - they must be temporarily uninstalled in order to troubleshoot.

If uninstalling the antivirus or firewall program solves the issue, try reinstalling it with a fresh copy downloaded from your antivirus program's vendor, then restarting your machine. You might find that simply reinstalling the program does the trick. Alternatively, it may block the service from starting again.

If you find that using the latest version of an antivirus program causes our service to not start when your machine boots up, please contact our support here - Please let us know which antivirus or firewall suite you are using, and which troubleshooting steps you have taken so far.

However, if the service does not start even with no antivirus or firewall programs installed, try uninstalling and reinstalling our suite by following these steps:

  1. Download the latest Killer Control Center from here - - and save it somewhere handy.
  2. Right-click Start
  3. Click Apps and Features
  4. Find and uninstall everything with "Killer" in it, including "Killer Drivers" and "Killer Performance Suite" and any variations.
  5. Restart your machine by clicking Start > Power > Restart
  6. Once your machine is back up, double-click the installer for the Killer Control Center that you downloaded.
  7. When the installer has completed, restart your machine.
  8. When your machine is back up, load the Killer Control Center, and check to see if it is operating normally.

If the Killer Control Center still reports "Service Not Running," please contact support here - Please let us know that you have followed all troubleshooting options in this knowledgebase article, and any other troubleshooting steps that you have taken, if any.
